Challenge
The Challenge
The $1.5 billion Gerald Desmond Bridge Replacement Project, now the Long Beach International Gateway, is
the centerpiece of a $4 billion capital improvement program at the Port of Long Beach and a vital infrastructure project for the City of Long Beach, State of California and entire nation. The massive, eight year construction project to replace an iconic bridge required a comprehensive outreach program that engaged and assisted the Port’s tenants (i.e., international shipping companies) to minimize delays in moving cargo, local residents and commuters to avoid major traffic snarls, local businesses, government officials and agencies, and many more.

The Solution
Westbound led communications throughout eight years of construction, from the groundbreaking event to
the grand opening ceremonies staged during the COVID-19 pandemic. Overall, we secured 2,000+ media placements, performed hundreds of community presentations, published 300+ construction updates, created a project-based website and mobile app, and captured the world’s attention for this vital project that impacted worldwide goods movement. We earned more than 20 awards of recognition during our contract period.
